Simulation Engineer -0099

The successful candidate must be able to work in a professional engineering team-based environment and possess a mindset that balances big picture concepts with attention to detail in design. Engineering teams are responsible for the design and integration of control systems for customer applications and processes. The Simulation Engineer is responsible for simulating automated mechanical systems and industrial robots for the customer applications and processes developed within the Engineering Team. 

This position is highly collaborative and works on many projects within the organization. 

The ability to experiment while reviewing concepts, think out-of-the-box, and providing solutions is the key to success in this role. 

The purpose of the Simulation Engineer role is to perform layout analysis and collision prevention of new and existing concepts by programing industrial robots in simulations. Layout analysis includes equipment placement, process and cycle time validation, reach studies, and offline programming preparation of existing and next generation concepts. 

Using computer simulations rather than physical prototype testing, this role provides information to support the Engineering Teams in decision making. The Simulation Engineer analyzes the performance of the equipment and assemblies by validating and optimizing the product and manufacturing systems. 

The Simulation Engineer will provide virtual analysis and verifications for design decisions prior to releasing to building the product. 

  • BS degree, in mechanical, manufacturing, industrial, or software engineering
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience with robotics
  • Basic understanding of CAD software and interpreting CAD models
  • Proven working experience with development of industrial robotic application programs, and simulation
  • Lean concepts and process analysis is very helpful
  • Experience with robotic simulation software such as RobotStudio, Roboguide, Visiual Components, Delmia is a plus
  • PLC platform experience is a plus
  • Industrial robotic automated work cell design experience highly desired
  • Knowledge of programming of industrial robotic stations for offline preparation is highly desirable.

Project Manager

The Project Manager (PM) is responsible for Business Unit (BU) projects throughout the entire project life cycle (from quote hand off to project close); providing customer support; leading project-related communications, and taking full project management ownership of related activities performed by multi-disciplined cross functional teams. 
Primary objectives are to manage project scope and scope changes, performance to schedule and budget, to satisfy the customer with the performance of the product equipment and the services provided, and to deliver business financial results that meet or exceed JR’s expectation for awarded projects.

What will your typical week consist of?

  • 80% of your time will be spent communicating with the customer and facilitating the build process, including customer changes.
  • 20% of your time will be split between supporting the Sales and Concept/Cost departments, reporting project status to upper management, and monitoring timing, cost, and quality.
  • Primary point of communication interface to the customer for respective projects.

  • Upon project award, the Project Manager is responsible for the leadership of the project including scope and scope change management, schedule management, cost management, open issue management, requirements confirmation and definition, risk analysis, project kickoff, performance management and compliance assurance.

  • Possess and demonstrate the interpersonal and leadership skills to build relationships with key customer contacts responsible for decision making.  

  • Actively listen, probe, and identify concerns. Understand customer's business and speak their language. Develops credibility, loyalty, trust, and commitment.

  • Owns project management through complete product life cycle from order acceptance through concept and final design, to equipment build, run-off and installation at customer facility and, acceptance and sharing of best practices and lessons learned utilizing the JR Project Execution Process (PEP).

  • In depth understanding of the financial details and budget of each assigned project
    Acts as the driving force for the team and requires cooperation through each portion of the project

  • Has developed strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills

  • Decision analysis capabilities; takes into consideration size, complexity, visible and unknown risks, timelines, etc

  • Ability to manage projects that may crossover to other JR locations.

  • Preparation and communication of project status meetings and escalation of critical issues.

  • Coordinating / monitoring project documentation, timelines, technical performance, budget, production, quality deliverables, and corrective action initiatives.

  • Supports and adheres to policies, procedures, and operational guidelines related to established quality management system (ISO 9001).

JR Automation is looking to add a CNC Machinist to our Night Team.  Standard night shift hours are Sunday through Thursday 7:00pm-3:30am, or Monday through Friday, 7:00pm-3:30am, with flexible OT hours as needed.  JR Automation is an engineer to order environment, focusing on low quantity volumes and high part number variety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read/interpret blueprints as well as 3D CAD models.
  • Machine metallic and nonmetallic parts to specified tolerances.
  • Set up and operate machine tools such as mills, lathes, grinders, and drill press.
  • Optimize speeds, feeds, and rate of material removal for various materials and cutting conditions.

As a member of our Nashville, TN team, the successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the overall project(s) technical performance, including quality, profit and adherence to schedule.  You will participate in the design, and prototyping of new concepts and act as an internal and external consultant on a variety of projects to support calculation or analysis requirements. 

You must be comfortable working in many areas and work closely with cross-functional teams such as operations, engineering, and the Leadership team to define and deliver outstanding products.

Position Summary:

The purpose of the Simulation Engineer role is to perform layout analysis and collision prevention of new and existing concepts by programing industrial robots in simulations. Layout analysis includes equipment placement, process and cycle time validation, reach studies, and offline programming preparation of existing and next generation concepts. 

Using computer simulations rather than physical prototype testing, this role provides information to support the Engineering Teams in decision making. The Simulation Engineer analyzes the performance of the equipment and assemblies by validating and optimizing the product and manufacturing systems. 

The Simulation Manager will provide virtual analysis and verifications for design decisions prior to releasing to building the product. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop the Simulation Engineering Team through leadership, mentoring, training, and hiring of simulation engineers.

  • Partner with PMO to Organize multi-level PM training, including training on process and tools consistent with Company standards
  • Mentor and coach project managers and subordinates, especially in requirements definition, compliance, planning, costing, and risk management

Mechanical Engineering Intern
Evan Finses - Michigan State University

Evan Finses is a Mechanical Engineering Intern at JR’s Quality Drive facility. Having learned about JR through a JR employee and longtime friend, Evan was compelled to check out the internship program, saying “I saw how JR was really pushing the limits within automated manufacturing and was fascinated. It was so different than many companies, and that really caught my attention.” He finds the work he is doing incredibly rewarding, especially seeing the components he designs being built on the shop floor. He says, “I really enjoyed seeing my idea come to life and how it worked with everyone else’s designs.” JR’s culture is also a rewarding part of Evan’s internship. He notes that the people are extremely friendly and the atmosphere is very positive. “Popcorn Friday isn’t too bad either,” he adds. After Evan completes his internship, he’ll return to Michigan State University to continue his Mechanical Engineering degree.

Mary Fundenberger - Purdue University

Mary Fundenberger is a Mechanical Engineering Intern at JR’s Tyler Street facility. She’s in her junior year at Purdue University. Mary learned about JR at the Purdue career fair and was interested immediately, saying, “The moment [they] mentioned design opportunities, I was hooked. I’ve always wanted to work as an engineer in design, and this internship has exposed me to more design work than I imagined.” She finds it rewarding to be solving new and challenging problems each day. She explains, “I’ve learned a great deal about the industry standards (more than I’ve learned in some of my classes), and that in itself is satisfying.” Mary’s enjoying her summer at JR, adding that the company culture is her favorite part, “The people are friendly and inviting. It’s a great place to work.”

Controls Engineering Intern
Matt Williams - Grand Valley State University

Matt Williams a Controls Engineering Intern at JR’s Tyler Street facility. Having been assigned to learn about JR through a Grand Valley State University internship prep course, Matt researched the type of projects made at JR and met with the recruiting team to discuss the opportunities that JR offers. This interaction compelled Matt to join the JR team, saying, “I saw a great opportunity here at JR to be able to get first-hand industry experience while still having the ability to grow both professionally and technically. Also, I learned that JR had a really good culture.” Since starting, Matt has been working on the controls for a complex, large-system machine. He’s found it most rewarding to see the machine being built and knowing that “nearly two months of design work is manifesting into something tangible. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment.” He adds, “I’ve never once felt ‘held back’ in any way. If anything, it’s the exact opposite; I spend a lot of my time outside of my comfort zone. This is a good thing because that’s where growth occurs.” Matt plans to complete his internship rounds at JR while he finishes his last two years of school.
