Mechanical Engineering Intern Intern

Internship Spotlight

Mechanical Engineering Intern
Ethan Drooger - Olivet Nazarene University

Ethan came to JR for CAD and convenience. He’s staying - still for those reasons - but now also for the camaraderie. Interns learn quickly that the atmosphere at JR goes beyond professionalism and prowess in the automation industry. “I was able to experience the great community here, [and] have had the chance to get to know a lot of different people,” Ethan explained. An example of this happened at the JR golf outing last summer when he won the long drive competition with his first drive of the day, and later won a brand new driver. After that, it became an inside joke amongst those that know him well. Aside from the friendly atmosphere, Ethan appreciates seeing his designs come to life on the shop floor. He realizes that “companies are always going to want to find a way to make their product more efficient, and by automating their process they can limit the amount of defects.” Automation is around to stay, and so is Ethan; he will be heading back to JR in June, but next time, as a full time employee.

Internship Spotlight

Controls Engineering Intern
Gabe Anzivino - Kettering University

Having interned at JR “longer than anyone ever should,” Gabe is a true testament to the diverse and entertaining experience interns receive here. He has heard students in other placements describe their workload as tedious and boring, but working at JR is different. “There’s always work to be done, so I rarely get stuck doing anything menial,” he says. “Every day is different here, which can be hectic sometimes, but it doesn’t get boring.” Gabe isn’t lucky to have landed such a well-rounded internship though - he sought JR out himself. When he didn’t find it listed on Kettering’s website, he contacted the recruiting team, and made it happen. He’s always been intrigued by automation, and explains that “being able to work on these machines is the most beneficial part of my education.” He started his internship in the summer of 2013, and still has another year and a half to go. Considering all of this, plus the abundant free food he’s received, we’re thinking maybe he just doesn’t want it to end.

Mechanical Engineering Intern Intern

Internship Spotlight

Mechanical Engineering Intern
Andrew Wadaga - Grand Valley State University

Now in his second internship rotation, Andrew has known from the start that this is where he wanted to be. The exposure interns receive in designing for a vast array of industries sets JR apart, and for Andrew, that was the biggest draw. Since, he’s been busy “flexing [his] design muscles” on creating components like sensor brackets, guarding, and reject part bins. Although he says they are not too complicated, he appreciates that “the project is always different and new. Each project has it’s own problems to solve, and they are never the same problem.” During his first rotation, Andrew got to experience a unique foray into problem solving when he partnered up with the other BU3 interns to redesign and reduce the cost of the BU3 smoker grill. “This seemed like an impossible task,” he said, “but we were able to combine several ideas and decrease the overall cost from $7,623 to $3,232.” Andrew’s internship has been challenging, rewarding, and fun!

Why West Michigan?

Why West Michigan?

West Michigan may just be the US's best kept secret. Affordable living, a thriving social scene, outdoor adventures, and much more, West Michigan really has it all.

Looking for something to do? Check out Holland's gorgeous public beaches! Visiting with us during the winter? Hit the slopes. Michigan is a great place to kick back, relax, and go fishing! Year-round festivals are an exciting draw and make for a great twist on family night. And, of course, it wouldn't be summer in Michigan without a few great rounds of golf!

JR’s success has sprung from its willingness to capitalize on the changing landscape in the automation industry.
